It's What I Do

You seriously want to look at this stuff??

Currently I am residing in New England and training to be a surgeon. I graduated from a University of Texas Medical School in 2005 with an M.D. and Texas A&M University in 2000 with a B.S. in Psychology. Originally I was born in Dubuque, Iowa; moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota; and spent my formative years in Dallas, Texas. If I'm playing a sport, it most probably is golf. I love the Dallas Stars, Cowboys, Mavericks, and Texas Rangers. Now you know my life.

I like this iPod nano thingy. Instead of studying for the United States Medical Licensing Exam Step III (which I'm taking in eight days), I'm sitting on the sofa with my friendly rottweiler Miss Texas, typing on this here blog, listening to my iPod. I have lots of music from which to choose. My last fifteen songs (and significance):

15. "Coming to America" Neil Diamond (saw him live in San Diego with my Aunt Lorrie)
14. "Smooth Criminal" Michael Jackson (yikes!)
13. "Mmm Mmm Mmm" Crash Test Dummies (cool tune from high school)
12. "I Wanna Go Home" The Beach Boys (Aaron Sorkin used this in Sports Night)
11. "Alive" Pearl Jam (phun)
10. "Hella Good" No Doubt (Gwen Stefani is probably top three on my list of people I'd like to meet)
9. "Desire" U2 (greatest band ever)
8. "Numb" Linkin Park (nice little punk/rap/whatever)
7. "This Love" Maroon 5 (new album is nice)
6. "Shimmer" Fuel (reminds me of college)
5. "Plush" Stone Temple Pilots (I seem to remember the intersection of Campbell Road and Meandering Way in Dallas, TX when I hear this song)
4. "Last Night on Earth" U2 (was ten feet from Bono when I saw him live with Kayla in Hartford, CT in 2006)
3. "Back 2 Good" Matchbox Twenty (fun best of album)
2. "Sledgehammer" Peter Gabriel (??)
1. "Unwell" Matchbox Twenty (see above)

I am ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certified. This means that I technically know how to use the shock paddles and administer life saving drugs should the need arise. Don't believe everything that you read though.

The fall colors up here in New England are beautiful. I'm simply amazed at the beauty. This of course, will be closely followed by extreme depression and despair. Soon all of the trees will be barren, we will be covered in perpetual clouds, and the temperature will hover in the 30's and 40's. Yipppeeee!

Shout out to Crew Chief Rob Flynn and Driver Hot Rod Fuller of David Powers Motorsports (they race dragsters in the National Hot Rod Association). The season ended Sunday in Pomona, CA with Hot Rod Fuller missing the national championship by a fingernail. Hated rival Tony Schumacher won for the fourth straight year in the final race. Outstanding season guys...hold your heads high. The CAT car will be a force to reckon with next season. Congrats!

If you don't know what professional dragracing is, I highly suggest you check it out. It can be seen weekly on Saturdays and Sundays on ESPN2 and ESPN2HD during the season...which just ended. Just sitting in the stands watching is probably one of the biggest adrenaline rushes you'll ever have. Imagine a car with 8,000 horsepower that goes from 0 to 100 MPH in less than a second. Then imagine your body shaking as the thing zooms past you at around 330 miles per hour. Pretty sweet.

Indeed my dog's name is "Miss Texas". People up here really don't get it, but that's ok. What can I say...it's New England.

We absolutely listen to music in the OR. Most of the operating suites have speaker systems that we can plug our iPod into and others have boom boxes. I don't have a particular preference for certain stages of a case. There are too many different cases and stages during those cases, so it would be hard to pick a particular song for that sort of thing. I usually just pick my OR playlist and shuffle away. Music is nice to have in the background, especially when you're operating in a stressful situation.
